VAS or Value Added Services are those services that offer differentiation and the ability for mobile operators to charge a premium price is known as VAS. Mobile VAS includes non-voice advanced messaging services such as SMS, MMS, MIM and UM. There are also voice based services such as PPT and WDA.
SMS, which is the Short Message Service, is a mobile data service that allows alphanumeric messaging between mobile phones and other equipment such as voice mail systems and email. MIM stands for Mobile Instant Messaging, which has the ability to engage in instant message (IM) from a mobile handset. This can be done through various bearer technologies, which includes SMS, WAP or GPRS.
Unified Messaging (UM) brings together all messaging media such as voice messaging, SMS and the various other mobile text messaging, and email. Push-To-Talk (PTT) combines aspects of cellular mobile communications, presence detection and walkie-talkie style communications. It provides the users the ability to quickly find one another and engage in brief communication.
